Paying with your phone seems like the next logical step in the smart phone world we live in. But why hasn’t the idea taken off if the concept is so simple? There are a few problems that Google is hoping that it can solve with Google Wallet. First its not the phone that is the problem, its the payment collection system that creates the adoption latency. You can have your banks info on your phone but there isn’t a universal method for scanning your phone to collect payment. Mastercard took a big stab at this with its Paypass system that is used in many markets in the United States, and works by tapping your credit card on a Paypass terminal. Google Wallet bridges the gap between your phone and the Paypass system and cuts out the need for plastic, well except for the plastic that’s in your phone.

So, simple enough, use my phone to buy stuff- nothing to revolutionary. The game changer here is not the technology, but its the INCENTIVE that Google has set up for businesses, not just the Google Wallet members, to use the system. This is in the form of Google Offers. This ‘Groupon Style’ service provides coupon deals that small businesses can provide for their clientele, by combining the technology of pay by phone, and the marketing style of Google Offers, you build a system that provides the right types of incentives to both the business owners and their customers.

Things You Need To Know

Google Wallet Will Use Citi Mastercard & or Google Pre-Paid Cards, exclusivity keeps down costs. (more)

Your Google Offers automatically sync to your Google Wallet, taking the ‘Groupon’ business model to the next level.(more)

Google Wallet requires you to set up a Google Wallet PIN that must be entered before making a purchase (more)

Tech Crunch Reports Google Wallet Coming Tomorrow! Sept 20, 2011

Via Tech-Crunch: Last week, Google posted an awesome teaser video for Google Wallet featuring George Costanza. The implication: Google Wallet would finally be launching soon. Now we think we know when: tomorrow.

Big thanks to Lewis Howes

*Update: Check out the whole Webinar Here*

Notes

Addresses the ROI Of Social Media, why does it matter to have fans and be on tumbler?

The ROI of the internet is what we measure not just Social Media, its only 17 years old but its dominating.

We can’t wrap our heads around what is happening with the size of the internet. The internet is bringing back ‘the small town feel’. Everyone knows everything about everyone.

We are starting to have relationships with brands as they would with individuals.

In the last 100 year’s we’ve been in the ‘push’ erra, buying ads, TV Ads, Social Media is ‘pulling’ people in. We still do occasional ‘pushes’ but success is in pulling people in.

Takes a new skillset for 2011 vs even 2005, its more about customer service than sales today.

‘How to Win?” (not charlie sheen quote)

Zappos is the primo example of customer service. The culture of a business is built into organizations, “If you are running a company, or a one person show, if you don’t have the ‘thesis’ correct you’ll fail. You must run a mariton, you can’t look for quick hits. You have to change culture of organisations to be PRO social media. You can’t half ass social media.”

People are skeptical, but our job is to convince them of believing in social media.

How do we change? First is to understand the ROI of a real community. We have to show examples of social media / real customer service works (Zappos sale to Amazon).

People will battle more on Customer Service more than price in the future. Its easy to copy anything out there, the way to win when you engage with your community.

We want to be in the BRAND business, not in the cheep price ‘sales’ business.

When people are just focused on numbers, its not focusing on People. If its about ‘name’ we win, if its about ‘numbers’ we fail. The conversation is going to be about how many people can we bring to the conversation.

(I’m not watching American Idol for this! haha)

He was number 2 on NYT Best sellers by 700 books to guy who has millions of viewers on TV, he accomplished it by Social Media.

Winning is a funny thing, ‘I’ve already won because I do what I love’ you don’t need 1 billion in sales – you need to feel good about yourself.

Winning is different for everybody – what are you driven by? The way to win is to do the right thing, ‘legacy is better than currency’ you’re not going to care about how much money you make when your 80, you’ll care about how you did it.

How did Old Spice Fail?

Silver Bullet. It had great success, wildly considered a great campaign. Social media is about ‘tactical’ do things this way… its all tactics.

The ‘Thank you economy’ is about having lifetime value.

Old Spice didn’t ENGAGE with the customer, they kept doing the same thing – retweeting nice things about themselves and selling to individuals. It got the word out about ‘The Party’ eveyrone showed up.. But then they didn’t do anything.

They could have created ‘contacts’ with individuals, they didn’t say thank you. The brand is an asset, but what they didn’t do is create an emotional center.

Talking with Lewis is pretty cool, but I’m going to be on Pierce Morgan.. <-haha!

Be nice to people, don’t just do them to the Garyv’s of the world, we should be nice to everyone.

Saying thank you is way more important than a quick buck.

Its a big miss for Old Spice not to hire 100 people and reply to people who their ‘fans’.

LOL if you buy the most copies of his book you get a dinner in NYC with Lewis & Gary… Who wants to buy me a couple?

Q & A

How do you focus on family with travil so much?

Gary: Quantity VS Quality. Its a struggle when you love to work. He’s in an AIRPORT! (He probably looks like a madman!) Balance to the best of your ability.

How to bring a CEO into the new relm?

Gary: Convenes them, but respect them. Use case studies, Borders VS Amazon – Netflix VS Blockbuster. Do it by executing, not by theory – must understand how people work. They ‘get it’ but need to challenge them. Be on the right side of history, stand up for what you believe in.

Best piece of advice today?

Gary: Real answer: what do you want to accomplish? Define what matters to you – my blueprint doesn’t work for anyone but me. What does your finish line look like? Define what you want to look like in the future, it will give you drive. Want a million bucks? Want to do what you love?

Best advice to find good employees?

Gary: Not worry about good employees! Jk… You don’t know what you have ’till you sleep with them’, from the business part – if they’re not good fire them. Don’t worry about anything till you get in the trenches with them… Lot easier to hire and fire – fire quickly.

How to keep motivated without results?

If you really really like it, the results are the game itself. Love the game- don’t worry about the results. If you’re not making the cash, examine what you’re doing to make sure its what you want to do.

“IF YOU LOVE THE GAME, THEN YOU HAVE NO WORRY ABOUT THE RESULTS.”

Be proud of what your selling, care about your end user – that is your game.

Last words Gary:Thank You

You have to own Facebook or be an Oil Tycoon to make a Mil a day right? Well while I was casually examining my Facebook news feed today when I glanced upon this status update from a friend:

The link leads to this site*, which is a sales page for an information product about making information products. Which is akin to a book about writing books in my opinion, which I’ve always found pretty funny. Anyways, I go to the site the product itself is about $2,000, not chump change for sure. Now for all you internet marketers out there, and aficionados of conversion rates, you can usually count on a 2% – 3% conversion rate on landing pages that get qualified leads. Its impossible for us to know for sure, I doubt whomever built the product is interested in telling us the sales conversion rates.

With the $2,000 price tag, and 2% – 3% conversion rate in mind I had to find out what type of traffic the site is getting. So off to CubeStat.com, Not the most accurate measure, but it gives a good idea of traffic.

According to this we’re looking at possible traffic of around 35,000 visitors per day. Lets do the math shall we?

36,000 visitors / day at 2% sales rate = 720 sales / day at $2,000 per sale = ~$1.4 Million

Ok These numbers can’t be 100% accurate… Even if I’m only half right, thats almost half a million a day. Even if I’m only 10% right, thats still $140,000 a day.

There sure is money to be made in the online marketing game – have any product idea’s that might be worth $2,000? Let me know, I’m in!

*The link is an affiliate link, I’m not the affiliate though the fella who made the Facebook post is.
